From Artisan Bakery to Village Coffee Shop: A Cypriot Couple’s Journey to Transforming a Community

In the serene village of Maroni, Cyprus, Kyriakos and his wife, Maya Kyriakos have embarked on a unique entrepreneurial journey. This couple, rooted deeply in Cypriot culture, has transitioned from running a bustling artisan bakery in Larnaca to creating a quaint coffee shop that embodies the essence of Cypriot life.
Embracing Change for Family
Kyriakos, an experienced artisan baker, and his wife decided to make a significant lifestyle change after becoming parents later in life.
“We wanted our child to experience village life, just like Cypriots do,” they shared. The couple chose Maroni for its charm, picturesque views, and a strong sense of community.
“Maroni ticked all the boxes for us.”
A Passion for Baking and Hospitality
While Kyriakos doesn’t operate a full bakery in Maroni, his skills as an artisan baker shine through the delicious brunches served at their coffee shop. “He bakes bread and creates amazing cakes and light snacks,” his wife explains. Their menu is a delightful mix of international and Cypriot flavors, offering items like French quiche with a Cypriot twist.

Inspired by Covid Reflections
The idea to open the coffee shop was sparked during the COVID-19 pandemic. Friends who moved to the Seychelles sent Kyriako and Maya a picture of a beautiful spot in Maroni, reminiscent of scenes from the movie Mamma Mia.
“We loved the place, and the previous owner, who was very attached to the business, liked us and sold it to us,” they recalled with delight.
Community First
For Kyriakos and his wife, the coffee shop is more than a business. “We open on weekends to enjoy time as a family and connect with friends and visitors,” they said. Their goal is not merely to make money but to build a community and offer an authentic Cypriot and international experience..
Expanding Horizons
Now established as a coffee shop, they are planning to expand their offerings. “We want to teach how to make traditional Easter pastries and hold writing courses with local authors,” the couple shared. They also aim to host acoustic Cypriot music nights and wild food events to celebrate both local and global cultures.

The Charm of Maroni
Living in Maroni feels like living in the heart of Cyprus.
“The village aesthetics are gorgeous, and there are excellent local schools and a strong church community,” Maya said, adding that the natural beauty and walking trails add to the village’s appeal, making it a perfect place for nature lovers.
From winter to summer, Maroni offers endless activities to enjoy. For example, you can go skiing and savor delicious seafood at the beach, all within a short distance. These remarkable experiences make Maroni a must-visit destination year-round.
Overcoming Challenges
Running a business in a village comes with its challenges, but the couple remains optimistic.
“It’s about finding a balance and not losing our enthusiasm.”
They emphasize the importance of cutting on costs, having a backup plan and multiple income streams.
Whatever one’s profession is, they should maintain those skills and find ways to use them in their business to reduce costs.

The Joy of Community Support
The couple’s biggest win is the incredible support from the local community.
“From day one, everyone has encouraged us and ensured we continue.”
Their Christmas Carol festival is a testament to this support, bringing together the entire village.
Staying Motivated
What keeps them motivated is seeing how they can build their dream and the impact they have on visitors.
“Seeing people leave our coffee shop with a memorable experience and wanting to come back makes it all worthwhile.”

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
Their advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is simple yet profound:
“Keep your feet on the ground but reach for the stars. Be ready to work hard, and listen to your business. Sometimes, changing the course is necessary. It’s all part of the journey.”
Kyriakos and Maya have created a unique space in Maroni that offers delicious food and drinks as well fosters a sense of community and cultural celebration. Their journey from running a bakery in Larnaca to relocating and continuing the legacy of The Old Coffee Shop in a beloved village, Maroni, is a testament to their passion and dedication.
